Race and ethnicity in foster care

Where possible, FCA seeks to match children and young people with foster carers of the same cultural or ethnic background in order to support their unique needs.

However, FCA also provides comprehensive pre- and post-approval training to encourage care provision from all foster carers that respects the race or ethnicity of children and young people in care.

All FCA foster carers are provided with the necessary information, support and training to enable them to provide the best possible foster care and to promote the culture or heritage of any looked after child or young person, regardless of their race or ethnicity.

Sanctuary Seeking foster care placements

FCA supports race and ethnicity in all our foster care placements, and this is also important with our Sanctuary Seeking children. A Sanctuary Seeking child or young person will have been separated from their family and applying for asylum in the UK.

Many of the children and young people in Sanctuary Seeking placements will have travelled from countries such as Afghanistan or Iran. They often don’t speak English and can be very frightened and confused. Wherever possible, FCA seeks to recruit foster carers of the same cultural background who can offer support and stability to these children.
