Age limits on foster care

The lower age limit for fostering in the UK is legally set at 18 years old, although many Independent Fostering Agencies (IFAs), including FCA, require a foster carer to be at least 21 years of age. There is no upper age limit on foster care; we only ask that you are active, enthusiastic, compassionate and capable of taking on the challenging task of fostering with FCA.

Who can foster with FCA

At FCA, our lower age limit to foster is set at 21 due to the demanding nature of our fostering placements. Many of the foster care placements referred to us require a high level of care for complex needs and difficult behaviour. This level of care often benefits from years of experience in foster care, working with young people, or managing behavioural difficulties.

Below the age of 21, it is difficult to judge whether or not a potential foster carer has the appropriate level of maturity and experience to foster a teenager or young person with complex needs.

While no upper age limit exists for fostering with FCA, we do ask that you are willing to take on the task with enthusiasm and verve, and that your age does not prevent you from the more active elements of fostering, such as picking up children or engaging in outdoor activities.
